I’ll Listen
“I’ll Listen” was the 2nd single from Get Away with Murder and released on April 8th 2022– just one week before the album. It serves as its de-facto title track with the lyric “get away with murder most every day, I want you to always be the same”. Dani Janae from the Pittsburgh City Paper described the song as “heavy on the punk, with charged lyrics and gritty vocals”. The DIY music video has a story of its own. It features live footage of Understatement performing the song intercut with Sully and Bala partying with their friends. This footage was initially intended to be used in the “Motocross” music video, since good times with this group of friends is what that track is about. Unfortunately due to a March loaded with gigs, they weren’t able to get together in time for the release of “Motocross”, so the footage was repurposed for “I’ll Listen” instead.
Motocross
Don’t be fooled by its title and cover art, “Motocross” has nothing to do with motocrosses or motorbikes of any sort. It’s a song about the simple joys of goofing off and having a good time with a group of your best friends. This was the first single from Get Away With Murder and released on March 25th 2022. The single featured a B-side in the form of an acoustic version recorded by drummer Brett Mullen with that group of friends in July of 2021 as Sully was still in the process of writing the song. Bala’s sister, Candrika Rice, plays bass on this version and Riot Azure did auxiliary percussion. The two of them would go on to form Lylyth with Sully in 2022. The tomfoolery heard in the “meme version” of this acoustic take on Motocross perfectly encapsulates the lyric “when we’re in the streets I’ll act like a f***ing clown”.
Counterpart
“Counterpart” was the 2nd song Understatement ever put out. It was first available in CD form off of their EP the worst thing you’ve ever heard 6 days before releasing as a single on all streaming platforms on August 27th 2021. The song was chosen because of the positive fan response to it during live shows. “Counterpart” would never fail to get the crowd dancing with its driving drumbeat. Like all songs off the EP, it was rerecorded for Get Away With Murder.
Hell Who Cares
When deciding which of the 10 songs they had at the time to release as their debut single, Understatement chose “Hell Who Cares” because they felt it best encompassed their sound: fast, upbeat, angsty, energetic, and with one hell of an earworm for the chorus. “Hell Who Cares” to this day remains one of Understatement’s most popular songs on streaming platforms. It has 3 versions: the original Studio 22 mix released May 22nd 2021, a remix from Razorblade Recordings released on July 9th 2021, and the rerecorded version from Get Away with Murder. The cover art features a demon character which Bala derived from the floor tiles in Sully’s kitchen where Understatement initially practiced. The unaltered floor pattern can be seen in the lyrics video and Spotify canvas.
